1. Introduction

"Subject skills”, you must have heard about this term at some point. This means mastering any particular topic of study/work. This might include academics, sports, or any other profession.

In this blog, we will explore every significant aspect of the concept of “subject skills.

2. What are subject skills?

"Subject skills" refers to the specific intelligence, qualifications, understanding, and knowledge needed to master any particular subject.

A person must go beyond his/her limits and the theoretical knowledge he/she has gained and solve the most critical problems by applying the concepts in the practical scenario.

3. Challenges in acquiring subject matter expertise.

When someone acquires subject skills, he/she will be exposed to multiple challenges and problems that need to be solved to become a subject matter expert.

Here are some of the challenges faced by students that need to be resolved to become experts in a particular field:

  1. Lack of basic knowledge

When someone tries to become a subject expert, he/she will initially not even have the basic knowledge of the subject. When He/she gains the initial basic understanding of the subject, then the journey starts to become an expert.

Having fundamental knowledge of any subject that someone is going to master is very important and keeps a strong foundation that brings confidence and a spark of learning advanced things.

  1. Lack of accessible study resources

After gaining basic knowledge of something, a person goes to learn advanced things. Now the challenge arises that the person initially doesn’t have enough accessible resources/books to learn advanced things.

So, a person must conduct good research before buying the study resources and then only purchase them. Without conducting good research, if someone purchases books, there are high chance that a person will not get good books and will buy something else which are not very useful.

  1. Lack of teachers/experts for teaching

Initially, you won’t be able to find an expert teacher or mentor who can teach you the subject at an intermediate or a very advanced level.

This can be considered one of the most difficult challenges while acquiring subject skills because, without the guidance of an expert/mentor, you can learn some basics but can’t move to advanced things.

  1. Multiple Initial failures

You will be exposed to multiple failures initially while starting the journey toward “subject skills” but these failures will become the stepping stones of the journey.

Instead of taking them as failures, take them as your initial learnings to achieve something extraordinary in the field.

  1.  Having patience for long-term success

As you will be exposed to multiple initial failures, you need to have enough patience to learn from the failures and move forward. It takes patience and perseverance to learn from our failures and turn our weaknesses into strengths.

Don’t keep high expectations in the very early stage of the journey as it will lead you to long-term failures. Keep records of your improvement to build a motivation to move ahead.

  1. Continue learning new skills

When you reach a certain level of mastery of any particular skill, you sometimes feel that it is the end of the learning process and there is no need to learn anything new.

This is not true. It is only the delusion (bhram) of our mind that blocks our progress. We continuously need to ask questions to ourselves to get out of the delusion created by our mind’s chattering and constantly acquire new skills.

4. How do subject skills help a student's personal growth?

Acquiring subject skills not only improves our academic performance but also helps in developing personal growth. Here are some ways in which acquiring subject skills may foster someone’s personal growth:

  1. Boost confidence

When students excel in their field of study, they feel more confident as they are moving ahead by constantly acquiring new skills.

Keeping moving ahead becomes the motivation for the students because they are breaking all the pre-assumed limits they had in their minds.

  1. Increases interactive skills

While acquiring new “subject skills," students have to interact multiple times with their teachers and continuously need to ask questions to learn something new.

This enhances their interactive skills and question-asking habits, the two most important things to be built within any student to achieve something extraordinary in their fields.

  1. Critical thinking

When students keep asking questions to learn something new, it enhances their critical thinking skills, which opens their minds to grasp knowledge and information across all dimensions.

Critical thinking helps solve more complex problems in comparatively less time than what others take.

  1. Leadership skills

Students with excellent “subject skills” teach other students in class, seminars, lectures, etc., which builds a leadership quality and a tendency to become leaders without compromising their learning skills.

  1. Better teamwork

Students can build better teamwork coordination with other students by teaching them particular subject skills.

When a student teaches other students, it helps to build a good understanding level within the students. They can easily coordinate with them and understand where their problem stands.

  1. Social Interaction

Students can get a chance to meet experts in a particular field and also can interact with them on a public platform.

Such things can make students socially active and motivate them to continue interacting with new people.

  1. Better career options

Students pursuing “subject skills” might have better career options than those who have skills in all the subjects.

Many big organizations look only for those who have excellent skills in a single particular field as they can help the organization grow its revenue and profit.

5. Role of teachers and parents towards students to enhance their topic mastery.

  1. Encouraging students

It’s the duty and responsibility of teachers and parents to keep encouraging students/children to do what they are interested in.

But, keep reminding them of their mistakes and telling them to learn from their mistakes to keep moving forward.

  1. Guide them to avoid distraction.

Endless distractions come to student’s minds and distract them from their journey. Nowadays, the biggest challenge for students in front of their journey is social media. Many students get trapped in social media apps and somehow get distracted.

In the present time, it’s the most important thing to be considered by teachers and parents. They must teach their students/children about the potential harms of using social media in excess and also teach them how to use those apps to help them in their academics.

  1. Make children/students goal-oriented

Make children/students goal-oriented by inspiring them to set specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART) goals.

Create an environment where mistakes are seen as learning opportunities. Guide students to make small initial academic or fitness goals to develop a good understanding of goal setting.

Develop an approach to learning things practically under the supervision of a mentor.

  1. Let them make their decisions

When students/children make their own decisions, it trains their minds to get rid of confusion and enhances logical thinking.

Initially, they can have multiple failures but as they move ahead, they will have excellent decision & risk-taking ability which increases their chance of success.

6. Role of technology in developing subject skills.

Technology has been evolving at a very rapid pace and continuously increasing its scope in the field of academics.

Many tools and apps help students grow their academic results. Here are some of the tools/apps:

  1. Khan Academy

Here you can access multiple courses related to social media, AI (Artificial intelligence), finance, personal finance, history, economics, and many more.

You can also access NCERT and the different state board syllabi which are available for almost all the classes.

  1. Google Classroom

It’s a powerful tool designed by Google that smoothly operates the communication between students and teachers.

You can submit assignments, make announcements, and take classes online without having to be present physically.

You just need to sign up, create an account, and class on it. You can invite students to the class by sharing a link by email or a class code.

Students or teachers can attach documents, videos, and files to share.

Google Forms can be used to design quizzes which include automatic grading and results can be imported directly into the Google Classroom.

  1. Chatgpt

Everyone is aware of this AI tool ChatGPT. You just need to provide prompts and the result will given within a few seconds.

Students are using this daily to gather information from all around the world.

Not only students, but many big and multinational companies are also using this to streamline their business operations.

In this era, digital evolution is at a rapid pace. If we use it wisely, it can be a blessing but if used in a wrong way, can be a curse also.

7. Some real-life examples of people having subject matter expertise

Multiple humans mastered their field of work. Below are some names mentioned of such human beings:
